A binary star is a pair of stars that are held in close proximity by each other's gravity, but not so close that they collide and destroy each other. Because of their deep gravity wells, they can only be orbited by planets under very rare and specific circumstances that are much too complicated to get into here. Plus we don't understand them ourselves.
